Special Events

Are you hanging around the D.C. area this summer, and looking for something to do?

Here are some fun activities you can do with us! Put these on your calendar. We'll publish more details as each activity gets closer. (Don't forget...we can provide rides for you.)

Sun, June 12 (3-7 PM)--Come to Watkins Regional Park in Upper Marlboro (about half an hour from UMD) for a personal tour of Old Maryland Farm. Meet rabbits, chickens, ducks, sheep, horses and cows!  We will meet and chat with the director of the farm who was previously one of the giant panda keepers at the National Zoo, and who has travelled to China to research their care. Then we'll take a ride around the park in a hay wagon pulled by a tractor, and enjoy a competitive game of mini-golf, with a stop at McDonald's for dinner before heading home.

Sun., June 19 (2:30-6 PM)--We'll go to Homestead Farm, a beautiful pick-your-own garden farm about 45 minutes from UMD. It's blueberry season, so come and pick a bucket-full to take home while enjoying the fresh air, farm animals and lovely countryside.

Mon., July 4 (afternoon and evening)--It's American Independence Day, and we will celebrate it in a classic American way...hot dogs, hamburgers and other meats cooked on an outdoor grill along with traditional picnic food, then FIREWORKS! Greenbelt has a wonderful display every 4th of July right over the lake in Buddy Attick Park.

Sat., July 16 (evening)--"Batter up!" Come with us to cheer on the Bowie Baysox baseball team! We'll talk about the sport beforehand, and then you can witness a very American experience when we watch the game at the stadium in Bowie, MD. It's Star Wars night, with costumed characters there for photo opportunities; and after the game are more fireworks!

Sat., July 30 (10 am to 5 pm)--Visit the Museum of the Bible in downtown Washington D.C. . Enter the 430,000-square-foot building located just three blocks from the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. and you'll experience interactive galleries, one-of-a-kind attractions and hundreds of artifacts that convey the global impact and fascinating history of one of the most influential, debated and best-selling books of all time, the Bible.

September 5--It's Labor Day weekend, which means school is about to start. So come for one last fun fling at the Greenbelt Labor Day Festival in nearby Greenbelt, MD! This community holds a very traditional American fair with rides, "fair food," music, games of chance and skill with prizes, and a parade! Join us at 10 AM to watch the parade, then eat lunch and go to the fair in downtown Old Greenbelt. See more information here.
